African Pride: A Maternity Photo Shoot in Toronto, Canada

For some, the path to parenthood has twists, turns, and challenges. For Dara, CEO of wedding planning agency Oruka Events Inc., and her husband, going through an unexpected waiting period for the first child was difficult at times. Now they await their second bundle of joy!

“We were so excited when we got married about having children together. My husband loves children and I have been a volunteer children teacher for over a decade. We figured we would wait three months to enjoy our newlywed status and would get pregnant soon after. Little did we know, it was going to be a journey of exactly 4 years and 2 days before we would welcome our first child, a beautiful baby girl called Iyanu.

To be honest, the three year wait was not an easy journey. We never imagined that having children would be a challenge for us and right when I was about to give up on this dream, God answered our prayers and gave her to us  as a gift. There is verse from the Bible I love to say to my friends, “God won’t give you more than you can bear”. Looking back, I see now in many ways how his timing was best.”

What was the theme for your shoot?

African pride. When thinking of the theme for my shoot I initially wanted to do the big tulle dresses and so on… But I sat and thought wouldn’t it be nice to show my culture and wear materials I love and grew up with. Ankara wax print material is commonly used in Nigeria and other African countries. My shoot showcases a pop of beautiful bright colors, The color of the dress is part of the gender reveal it featured a mix of two African prints with beautiful butterflies and flowers all over. which I loved. I also incorporated bantu knots for my daughter wrapped in Gold. Working with all the vendors to bring this vision to life just about 2 weeks before birth was so amazing! I’m glad I went back to my roots on this shoot.

Were there any memorable moments during your maternity shoot?

My favorite moment was dancing with my daughter right at the end. It’s something I’ve wanted to do. We danced together right after the shoot, and she was so happy. It’s a moment I will always remember
