When crafting a look, having a reference to lean on can truly aid in helping you have a great style moment. Whether it’s a particular look from your favorite style star or an specific era you’re trying to emulate, having a pin on your mood board that you can use as inspiration for your outfit helps you stand out and look like you navigate your style and fashion choices with intention for your big day. Actresses Zendaya, Ayo Edebiri and Ariana Grande all understood this principle last night at the Globes. Zendaya’s longtime stylist and collaborator Law Roach confirmed that the starlet’s look was inspired by and in tribute to Joyce Bryant, the iconic nightclub singer who rose to prominence in the 40s and 50s with her signature silver hair and love for opulent nightgowns. Ayo and Edebiri seemingly had more silent but obvious nods to iconic looks. Ariana’s look seemed to be inspired by the grace and delicacy of Audrey Hepburn’s iconic Old Hollywood style (very My Fair Lady-esque) while Ayo evidently paid homage to Julia Roberts’ legendary suited look from her appearance at the 1990 Golden Globes ceremony, down to the all gray suit and clunky, oversized brown shoe.

When looking for something to wear, particularly for a major occasion like an award show or a wedding, it can be difficult to decide what color to go for but there’s one true statement that should always be considered when in your search: red and gold are flattering on everybody. The versatility found in both of these hues creates for the ideal color for brides looking to dress a wide range of skin tones for their big day. As far as golds go, Mindy Kaling went bright and saturated while Rachel Smith went the more subdued, foiled shade range with each benefiting their skin tones perfectly. On the other end, red saw a variety of shade ranges last night as singer Maren Morris and Morris Chestnut went bold and bright with their’s while Sheryl Lee Ralph opted more a richer, more demure variant of the color.

Let’s be clear: Old Hollywood Glamour isn’t going anywhere nor has it ever left the style scene. However, we are seeing a surge in the stylistic choices this era ushered in coming back with a vengeance in the style space. From gloves and brooches to appliqués and feathered boas; the fun of this fashion circa was in its unabashed opulence. By not shying away from accessorizing a look with the most outlandish of accessories, it allowed for the entire outfit to do the talking without its wearer ever uttering a word. Take a page out of Zoe Saldana and Alexandra Daddario’s looks and add an off-the-shoulder component to your wedding look or go the paths of Kerry Washington and Auli’i Cravalho by adding classically chic gloves to your look or floral appliqués to initiate the ultimate sense of glamour.
