A Whimsical Engagement Session in Raleigh, North Carolina

Robin and Daniel met in the spring semester of their freshman year of college in 2015 after joining the same campus ministry. At the time, Robin was attending UNC-Chapel Hill and Daniel was attending NC State University. Eventually the two got to know each other more and by the end of sophomore year, Daniel knew there was something special about Robin.

Robin says, “He knew that I was focused on my studies and being from NY, I had a seemingly tough exterior, so he came up with a 2-year plan to win me over. It only took him a year; we went on our first official date in August of 2017 and we’ve been together ever since.”

Engagement Story:

One day in August of 2020, Daniel told me he found a nice restaurant for us to go to. We had recently talked to my parents about our plans to get married and got their blessing, so I figured what he was up to. He took me to an Italian restaurant in Downtown Durham. It was cozy, had a great ambiance and the pasta was delicious. From there, we walked to one of my favorite dessert spots for ice cream. We sat and talked in the plaza until it started raining. Then, we ran back to the car, laughing as I tried to keep up in my heels. We drove back to my house and that’s when he finally popped the question. I cried a bit and of course I said “Yes!” It was definitely one of the happiest moments of my life.

For the Groom: Walk us through the behind the scenes of creating this special day:

Coming up with a plan to propose to Robin was quite the challenge. I wanted to make sure I made her feel special, but knowing Robin, anything public was out and so was anything overly extravagant. On top of everything, the pandemic meant a lot of our favorite places had still not reopened. I had had the ring for some months, yet I still was having trouble coming up with the perfect plan. When Robin told me about her plans to drive up to visit her family in New York, I knew there was no time to wait for perfection. I wanted her to be able to celebrate with her family and friends so I had to act quickly! Robin loves pasta so I found a nice Italian restaurant downtown, made a reservation for us the day before she was planning to leave, and plotted a route to get some of her favorite dessert after. Unfortunately, she could tell from my excitement about this particular dinner what I was planning so it was not much of a surprise, but I would still call the evening a sparkling success.

What makes your love special?

It’s not every day that you find someone you feel comfortable being your true self with. As we’ve grown together in our relationship, we’ve seen how much we complete each other. Being in a relationship with Daniel has not only brought me joy but it has also taught me about compassion, commitment, and vulnerability. Our love has made me a better person and I am so thankful for that.

What was the theme of your shoot?

The theme of our shoot was carefree and effortless love

Were there any memorable moments during the shoot?

One memorable moment was when our photographer asked Daniel to pick me up and spin me around. I was a little worried he was going to drop me but I was also laughing so hard and having a great time. I couldn’t believe how much fun it was being spun around like a kid.

What are you most looking forward to about your wedding?

I’m looking forward to saying “I do”, hearing our officiant pronounce us husband and wife, and celebrating the moment with friends and family.

Have you started planning your wedding?

Yes, our wedding is just around the corner and thanks to our planner, Aisha Garnett (Sheree Amour Weddings), we are right on track.

Congratulations to the happy couple! We wish them many years of wedded bliss!
