Modern Elegance. Effortless Ease. Luxurious Tailoring. Simplicity and Subtlety; All fashion and style terms that are synonymous with the great Giorgio Armani.
The iconic Italian designer affectioinately coined the “King of Italian Fashion” Giorgio Armani redefined style in a way that brought a glowing effortlessness, elegance and prestige during his run as head of his namesake-fashion empire. Today, it was announced that the icon passed away at 91 years old.
Today, we reflect on his legacy and how he has managed to shape bridal fashion by way of formalwear into the state of Moderna it currently finds itself in.

Unstructured, Soft Tailoring
Sir Armani skillfully managed to completely reimagine how a suit can and should be designed. Thanks to his desire to relax the fit of a suit, by taking out the shoulder pads, linings and heavy tailoring, the Italian Fashion King stripped the suit as we knew it from its rigid makeup and made it a garment that could go from day to night, from brunch to nuptials at any given moment.
In 2016, after receiving the illustrious Cecil B. DeMille Award, Hollywood legend Denzel Washington donned an Armani suit that perfectly captured the designer’s evolved suit design.

Blushed & Bashful Luxury
Delicate. Understated. Chicly reserved. Armani’s legacy will be one that admonished onlookers, customers and critics alike to see that less truly could be more. Giorgio’s ability to create simplicity in luxury and glamour in the high-end was unmatched. He added depth and opulence to his pieces through intentional detailing like a sliver of a ruffle here and a conscious choice of an ultra-luxe fabric like silk chiffon there, making his designs luxurious without a price tag dripping off of it.
Armani dressed Beyoncé with this philosophy evidently in mind for the 2008 Met Gala. Themed “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy”, the blushing gown reflected his take on designing luxurious fashion perfectly and allowed Beyoncé to wear the dress and not the other way around, which was one of his public design missions.

Minimalism is King – Always
If you think the minimalism, beige wave started with influencers and a Yeezy launch in 2017, you are sadly misguided. One of the earliest incubators of the idea of minimalism in fashion was Sir Armani himself. His signature design aesthetic that had a core value in capturing clean lines, neutral tones and the use of the finest of fabrics made him one the smartest adaptors of the style aesthetic.
Rihanna captured his minimalism perfectly when she donned a custom dress by the designer to the 2012 Grammy Awards. Complete with mixed metal accessories, the styling of this look worked poignantly with the simplistic gown design and was worth sexy and understated, making it a timeless look the R&B songstress’ fashion legacy remains positively marked by.

He Affected Menswear Too
And although Mr. Armani had a lock on the women, he has managed to influence the department of menswear just the same. After making a major splash in menswear with his design of the now iconic wardrobe of Richard Gere for his starring role in 80s classic, American Gigolo, Armani became one of the most sought after designers for menswear fashion, thanks again to his reconstruction of the traditional garment.
His impact in menswear was once again reupholstered when he designed NFL star Russell Wilson’s wedding suit which featured a six button peak lapel evening jacket with tails, a white shirt, tie, vest, and bow tie. Dapper and demure, this whimsical look reminded the modern onlookers of fashion that Sir Armani still reigns supreme in menswear.
