How did you get your start in the stationery industry?
I was starting a book club and decided to make my own invitations to send to friends and women I know that love to read. I sent the invites out and received a call from one of the women I had invited. She shared with me that she would not be able to make the book club but that she wanted me to do invitations for her non-profit organizations’ launch party. I ended up designing her invitations and received such great feedback from guests that I decided to start a stationery business. I started out creating note cards, thank you cards and invitations.
What is your main inspiration behind your invitation design concepts?
Style and fashion are the source of my design inspiration. I attend Fashion Week twice a year and draw inspiration from the fashion I see on the runway. The inspiration comes in the form of colors, trimmings, fabrics, embellishments, clothing structure and the overall style of a collection.
What makes your services different from other companies who specialize in stationery?
What sets House of Papier apart is my understanding that invitations are really just an extension of your own style. Essentially it’s an accessory. Brides especially want their wedding to be glamorous. How much more glamorous can you get than Clutch Invitations? My invitations appeal to the fashionable aspects of brides and weddings.
What tips or advice would you offer to brides who are looking for unique invitations?
- Do your research. It’s important to find a stationer who will take the time to cater to your unique needs.
- Start early! If you are looking for unique invitations that probably means they are custom made. Customized invites will likely have longer lead times. You should contact a stationer right after you get engaged. It’s okay if you don’t have all the details of the wedding figured out.
- Search the popular wedding blogs. Wedding bloggers showcase unique elements of weddings. You are more likely to find unique invitation designers on these blogs.
- Think beyond your borders. Don’t be afraid to search for stationers outside of your local city or state. Most designers that create unique invitations work with clients nationwide.
