Gown Shopping Tips from Bridal Designer Della Giovanna – Blackbride.com

Finding the dress of your dreams can be the most wonderful experience of your life, or it can be the worst. Whether you choose to bring 10 friends or just your mom, go to every bridal salon in the country or find the perfect one the first go around, it never hurts to have a little help from the experts that have seen (and heard!) it all. Michelle Della Giovanna, founder of Della Giovanna, gave us a few inside tips and tricks to help you prepare for this exciting time.

1. Know your venue and date– It's hard to pick a dress without first knowing where and when you will tie the knot! You may want a ballgown but if you end up having an outdoor reception it may not mesh well. Or, if you plan on having a beach wedding, you don't want a heavy dress that you will be too hot in. Figure out what type of dress fits best with the overall picture.

2. Figure out your budget– there is nothing worse than falling in love with a dress you can't afford. Figure out your budget first and tell your consultant. That way when you find the right dress, nothing is standing in your way!

3. Feel your best– Put in the extra effort and do your hair and makeup when you go to try on gowns. Starting your search and feeling great about how you look is important. Going into your appointment confident will make a huge difference when you are trying on the perfect dress. This also gives you an idea of how you will look on the big day.

4. Come prepared– Have the right undergarments and shoes with you. Make sure to wear all nude undergarments. Nothing ruins a special moment more than seeing your black underwear through your dream dress.

5. Choose your company wisely– Choose two supportive people at most to come with you when you shop. Remember, this is your big day and your opinion is the one that matters the most. Bring people who have your best interest in mind and who support your decisions. Having too many opinions can make you second-guess yourself

6. Keep your expectations in check– Most brides expect to cry when they try on the one. Most brides do not actually cry until they put the dress on the day of their wedding. Yes, you will have that "Aww this is it!" moment, but it's not as dramatic as you see on TV. Don't feel like you didn't find the right dress just because you didn't break down crying.

7. Take recommendations– The consultants at a salon pick out dresses for women every day. You may have an idea of what you like, which you should definitely voice to your consultant, but be sure to keep an open mind if they recommend something. They know what silhouettes are most flattering, and what items are in style. You may end up loving something that you had not considered before.

8. Do your research– Pinterest is going to become your best friend during the wedding planning process. Take advantage of this and pin all the dresses you love. After you've accumulated a bunch, take a look at the overall picture. I bet you'll start noticing a trend in which styles you pinned the most.

9. What's your style– Ask yourself… "What is my personal style?" Are you edgy, fashion forward, girly, sporty, vintage, etc. You can always ask a friend if you aren't sure. Knowing your personal style can help you narrow down the selection. Don't feel like you have to conform to the stereotypical wedding dress. If you are vintage, check out Jenny Packham. If you are a minimalist try Amsale. If you're a girly girl go for Monique Lhullier. And if you’re edgy try Della Giovanna. There is a dress out there for everyone. On the most important day of your life you should be yourself.

10. Have fun– Remember that picking out the dress is half the fun. So many brides get stressed out over the dress, but going shopping should be fun. Try on a dress you would never wear and have a good laugh! Enjoy a little champagne if the consultant offers it. Take a selfie or two or three. Just remember that you only get to do this once so look around and take in the moment.
