A Royal African Wedding in London

While attending the same church, Nneka and Roy met in 2015.  You can call it divine order, perfect timing, or fate stepping in but that meeting turned into the beginning of a connection that could not be broken. Three years later, the couple walked down the aisle twice! Once in a beautiful, traditional African ceremony and also in a gorgeous white wedding ceremony in London, UK.

Engagement story

Roy took Nneka to a restaurant in Park Lane Hilton, London one day. He planned with the head waiter ahead of time and when the couple arrived they were told that they were the 100th customer that year, and would be given a tour of the restaurant. As they came to the roof top, where we could see London’s skyline, Roy popped the question. The head waiter gave a signal to the chef and provided a complimentary dessert and champagne after Roy gave a signal to him to indicate that Nneka said yes.

What makes your love special?

Our friendship; we are best friends. We both put God first, and we fasted (6am to 6pm not eating) and prayed about our relationship for forty days. We have a good understanding of each other and our languages are the same, since we are both from Igbo tribe.  We both got confirmation in different ways from God. Roy’s brother saw Nneka in a dream with her being a part of the family. Nneka’s mother was called by a pastor from Nigeria and told that her daughter has found her husband.  In 2014, Roy also had a dream about Nneka, before he had even met her.

From the Bride:

It was stressful because I wanted everything to be perfect.  The traditional wedding was like a party and the white wedding was more serious.  He is my perfect match and I am very happy!

From the Groom:

It was magical for me. It was just amazing. The planning was challenging, but when everything came together, it really paid off. I have made my mind up to just enjoy the day. Traditional ceremony was very colorful and enjoyable. There was nice atmosphere and good music. The traditional attire for the day was very special as it was the first time people saw me in African attire. It was a very special experience. On the day, the Pastor said, ‘You can turn around to see the bride.’ I was very nervous and couldn’t believe my eyes. I had the same expression like the one in the dream – shocking. After that, we went to Dubai for nine days for our honeymoon. Everything came together well and we had the wedding we always wanted.

Your best/most memorable moment:

The whole wedding is memorable, it is hard to choose the best memorable moment. If I (Nneka) had to choose, it would be my friend singing the wedding song in the church. (Roy) My favorite part is receiving the ring from the bride, a real platinum ring.

Wedding song, explain choice for song:

“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran

 Favorite wedding detail:

The five-layered, Tiffany blue marble cake. We loved the banquet venue as well, because of its traditional British décor.

Traditional Ceremony

What are you most looking forward to as a married couple?

Having the first night. We were brought up with traditional Christian values and reserved ourselves for each other on our wedding night. For long term, I am looking forward to growing as a couple and as a family.

Advice for a Bride/Groom on their wedding day:

To all Afric
ans like us, keep the wedding small and intimate. When we look back, we treasured time and emotions shared with our close friends and family members more than throwing a big wedding; and it will save you some money.

Never be ashamed to get support from people. Stress can sometimes cause problems. Just enjoy the day, because it goes by quick.

Congratulations to the happy couple! We wish you a fruitful marriage and many years of wedded bliss!
