As we dive into winter, I’m sure most of you are noticing some changes to your skin. During the summer months you may be oily, or if you’re lucky, have perfectly hydrated skin. But as the cooler weather moves in you may find yourself frustrated with dry, blotchy or flaky skin, or even become more prone to eczema. Needless to say, if this happens you may be equally frustrated with your makeup application as you are with your thirsty skin.

Why is your skin dryer in the winter? It’s simple. The cold temperatures and lack of moisture in the air means lack of moisture in your skin – weather outdoors in the cold are or indoors with dry heat. This winter we’re going to help you be better prepared so you can continue to look fabulous well into the spring! The following list of Top 5 Beauty Must Haves for Winter will keep you hydrated, moisturized and feeling amazing throughout the cold and snowy winter months.

1. Humidifier

You were probably expecting some awesome, quick fix skin crème to be first on the list right? Well, I like to get to the root of the problem first. Since the lack of moisture in the air is such a big cause of dry skin, the first thing you need to do is add some of that moisture back where you can. A humidifier can help keep your home feeling a little cozier during the cooler months. Ultimately it can increase air quality by adding moisture into the room and back into your skin. It’s truly a win-win.

2. Water

Dehydrated skin lacks luster! Be sure this winter you’re combating dry, thirsty skin by drinking plenty of water. It will help keep your skin supple and lips moisturized to avoid cracking. It’s a simple remedy and is sure to help. If you want to go a step further, enjoy coconut water – I prefer using it in my smoothies instead of juice. Coconut water has countless health benefits and is an amazing, natural solution for keeping hydrated. If you don’t like it plane, try some in your favorite flavor. I love pineapple!

3. Hand Crème

They say your hands tell your age! Well if you’re looking for ways to defy aging be sure to keep a nourishing hand crème handy. Every year at the beginning of fall, I notice my skin changing starting with my hands. They become dry and if I’m not careful they begin to crack with all that hand washing unless I keep them well moisturized. My two favorites are Aveda’s Hand Relief and Neutragena’s Fast Absorbing Hand Cream.

4. Skin Crème

You’ll certainly want to bump up the skin care regimen for winter. One simple way is to opt for a crème instead of a lotion. Crèmes are typically more emollient and hence, more moisturizing and appropriate for dryer skin. Be sure to choose appropriately for your face and body – you’ll want a crème made specifically for each.

5. Lip Treatment

Our lips are often one of the first things to show signs of dryness. They become chapped, cracked and if you’re not careful can begin to blead all from a lack of moisture. Keep your lips soft and kissable for you know who with a lip treatment. You may be thinking your handy, drug store lip balm will do but they often just sit on the lips instead of penetrating for a more moistening effect. If you find you lip balm just isn’t enough, treat your lips to a lip treatment that includes vitamin E and sun protection and will nourish and condition your lips. You can thank me later!
