It was 2014 when Katherine was out and about in Midtown Atlanta celebrating with friends. Roddy approached her assuming they had met before, but they had not. The two exchanged phone numbers, and it would be the beginning of a beautiful friendship and relationship. Now Roddy and Katherine are preparing to take on the next chapter of their lives together as husband and wife. Read more of their love story, and check out their beautiful engagement session with Fotos by Fola behind the lens, previously featured in the Winter 2021 Issue of Black Bride Magazine.
Bride: Katherine Upshaw (Katie), 32, Executive Assistant at Emory University
Groom: Roddy White, 39, Retired NFL Player
Place of Residence: Atlanta, GA
Engagement Shoot Location: Reed House Hotel, Chattanooga, TN
Wedding Date: March 2022
We were at home one day after leaving the gym and heading to lunch. We were having a serious talk about our future when Roddy went into his closet, brought out the ring, and asked me to be his wife. It was very unexpected. The ring was gorgeous, and I just lost it. I was so happy and in shock all day. It felt like a dream!
For the Groom: Walk us through the behind the scenes of creating this special day.
It was very simple. I didn’t want to make it a huge thing, but just me and her. I love Katie, and I knew it was time for us to be engaged. In the house that day just seemed like the right time.
Were there any memorable moments during the shoot?
Roddy and I are always looking for a time to be silly. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, so I love that Fola was able to capture not only our love and connection, but also our silly moments. Being a big kid with Rod is one reason why I love him so much.
What are you most looking forward to about your wedding?
We are just excited to celebrate with our family and friends, and make our union official. I’m honored to be Roddy’s wife, so just having everyone we love witness that is a blessing. Also, we will be tearing up the dance floor!
Congratulations to the happy couple! We wish them many years of wedded bliss.
